What’s the best diet to reduce my risk for cancer?

What is the best diet to follow if I want to reduce my risk for cancer?

More and more, I’m seeing research that addresses not only food but also lifestyle issues, such as exercise and body weight, in supporting our body’s defenses against cancer. Agencies that track broad trends have come up with some common themes that you should find helpful:

  • Make your diet plant-based. Include at least five servings per day of fruits and vegetables.  Favor whole grains over refined grains, and don’t forget to have beans, nuts, and seeds regularly.
  • Limit red meats and processed meats.
  • Exercise or do some form of physical activity for at least 30 minutes a day.
  • Maintain a healthy weight throughout your life.

Keep in mind that you may need to adapt these recommendations if you have specific dietary needs or health issues.  Also, if you are undergoing treatment for cancer or just completed treatment, check with your healthcare team before making any major changes in your diet or lifestyle.
