  • 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 x 8ounce block of classic pasteurized tempeh

Directions

  1. In a bowl, beat together the smoked paprika, lemon juice, maple syrup and salt. Take the block of tempeh and rub the marinade intro it on all sides. (See Ann''s Tips)
  2. Put the tempeh into a plastic bag along with any remaining marinade and let sit for at least an hour. Overnight is best.
  3. Grill or broil over a medium flame on both sides until well browned and cooked through. Thinly slice and use as you want.

Chef Tips

For more of a bacon substitute, double the marinade recipe and slice the raw block of tempeh into 1/4 inch strips and coat each side and continue from step 2.

Tempeh is a living fermented food and can cross-contaminate other foods if not treated correctly. When using tempeh,  treat it as you would meat, that is use a separate cutting board and wash hands, knives or any other kitchen tools that have come into contact with it well.
